Topic:     Vocabulary: Literacy's Forgotten Child

Speaker:      Joneen Lowman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Joneen Lowman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an assistant professor in the department of audiology and speech pathology at Bloomsburg University, specializing in language development and language remediation. Dr. Lowman works closely with the Southern Columbia School District in kindergarten readiness programming which has received national exposure and recognition.  She conducts research on inclusive practices for providing speech and language services with an emphasis on lexical acquisition. She also investigates the utility of the Internet for providing in-service training to speech-language pathologists.Dr. Lowman received her master’s and doctoral degrees in speech-language pathology from Florida State University.

 

  Who Should Attend?

The presentation is valuable and applicable to speech-language pathologists working with preschool and school age children as well as regular and special education instructors, school psychologists, and other personnel who work with children with language disturbances.

Level of instruction:  Intermediate. Basic familiarity with literature on language development is expected.

Act 48 credit is available for this workshop.

The Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology.  This program is offered for .5 CEUs  (Intermediate level, Professional area.)  ASHA Continuing Education Provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.          

 

Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will :

1.       State two semantic skills that should be addressed in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade and later grades.

2.       Select vocabulary words from the curriculum that will contribute to a child’s overall lexical development.

3.       State the different levels of semantic understanding that a child can have for a word.

4.       State at least two strategies that will provide semantic understanding at each of the different levels.

5.       State two strategies for assessing receptive and expressive knowledge of vocabulary taught.
