Family Engagement and SLPs:
Increasing Collaboration to Improve Communication Outcomes
Family engagement may be described as family members having a primary and meaningful role in educational programming. Decades of research note the importance of family engagement in the improvement of educational and therapeutic outcomes. The practice of family engagement promotes equitable partnerships among schools, families, and communities to actively advance student achievement through shared commitment, decision-making, and responsibility. This training will explore aspects of family engagement and how they relate to the provision of speech-language services for children. Participants will learn the connections between family engagement and special education law. They will also explore ways that speech-language pathologists can facilitate relationships and optimize collaboration with families. SLP’s will learn a variety of strategies for connecting with families as well as ways of integrating family engagement into their everyday speech-language practice.
